Rethinking the Museum
Learn moreWhat is the significance of museums in the twenty-first century?
In recent years, the collection of the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen has become more polyphonic and global. Numerous new acquisitions expand the ideas of Western art history to include the perspectives of women and non-European artists. Discursive formats invite new perspectives on the collection and reflect on the role of the museum as an institution today. Learn how the renowned collection of modern and contemporary art is constantly evolving.
History of the Collection
Learn moreFrom its beginnings in 1961 to the present day
Explore the history of the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen—from its foundation as a state museum for modern art to the latest acquisitions in the fields of photography, film, and virtual reality. With the new K20 building and K21 in the former state parliament building, the Kunstsammlung was given two unique exhibition venues. Eighty-eight works by the artist Paul Klee once formed the basis of the collection. Today, the museum presents masterpieces of classical modernism, postwar modernism, and contemporary art.
