Provenance
The work “Au premier mot limpide” was painted by Max Ernst on the wall of Paul Eluard’s house in Eaubonne in 1923. Eluard sold the house in 1932, but the murals were preserved. In 1967, Eluard’s daughter had the works removed and mounted on canvas. They were then offered for sale by her and the André François Petit Gallery. The Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen purchased the painting “Au premier mot limpide” through Galerie Beyeler for its holdings in 1974.
