Provenance

The painting “La figlia dell’ovest” by Carlo Carrà remained in the artist’s possession from its creation in 1919 until at least 1927. In 1942, it can be found in the Milan collection of Rino Valdameri. It is also attributed to an unknown private collection in Milan in 1947; this could refer to the collection of Carlo Frua De Angeli, where the work can be found from 1948 to at least 1957. In 1964, Änne Abels’ gallery offered the painting “La figlia dell’ovest” for sale to the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen, which purchased it for its holdings.

Between 2009 and 2012, several freelance provenance researchers examined the origins (provenance) of all works in the collection of the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen as part of a comprehensive research project funded by the German Lost Art Foundation. The focus was on all works created before 1945. For the painting “La figlia dell’ovest,” the ownership history during the National Socialist period (1933–1945) could not be fully clarified. For this reason, the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen commissioned a more in-depth investigation into the history of this work in 2025.
