Provenance

The painting “Im Blau” by Wassily Kandinsky remained the property of the artist and his estate from its creation in 1925 until at least 1953. After the work was exhibited in Alfred Flechtheim’s Berlin gallery in 1931, Kandinsky sent it to Valentine Dudensing in New York, who presented it in his gallery in 1932. Due to the events of 1933, the Kandinskys left Germany that same year and settled in Paris. The works that were in New York at that time therefore remained in the Valentine Gallery for the time being. In July 1933, Kandinsky authorized Emmy Galka Scheyer to dispose of the paintings stored in New York. Scheyer showed the painting at an exhibition at the Stendhal Art Galleries in 1936 and kept it in her apartment in Los Angeles. After Wassily Kandinsky’s death in 1944, the work became the property of his wife Nina, who in the 1950s signed a contract with the Maeght Gallery in Paris to represent Kandinsky’s works. From 1957 to at least 1959, the work was part of the collection of J. B. Urvater. The Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen purchased the painting “Im Blau” from Myrtil Frank through Galerie Wilhelm Grosshennig for its holdings in 1964.
