Provenance

From its creation in 1932, the painting “Garten nach dem Gewitter” by Paul Klee remained the property of the artist, who gave it to the Galerie Alfred Flechtheim on consignment that year. On October 24, 1933, Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler concluded an exclusive contract with Paul Klee. He subsequently took over Galerie Flechtheim’s consigned works, which arrived in Paris in January 1934. The work can be traced to Kahnweiler, owner of Galerie Simon, until October 1934, when he passed it on to J. B. Neumann in his Contempora Art Circle in New York. In 1938, Galerie Simon again loaned the work to the Exhibition of Twentieth Century German Art, which toured various cities until 1940. The work reached the Nierendorf Gallery by September 1942 at the latest. It is unclear whether Karl Nierendorf added it to his permanent gallery holdings or held it on consignment for Lily Klee, in whose ownership the work would have passed after Paul Klee’s death in 1940. At an unknown date, G. David Thompson purchased it for his collection, where it remained until it was sold to the Galerie Beyeler in Basel in 1960. The state of North Rhine-Westphalia subsequently purchased the painting “Garten nach dem Gewitter” from Galerie Beyeler together with a further 87 works by Paul Klee. They formed the basis of the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen, which was founded in 1961.
