Provenance

The painting “Jour de fête” by Marc Chagall was purchased directly from the artist by the Russian collector and friend of Chagall Jacob Kagan-Chabchay one year after its creation in 1914. The work was located in Moscow until 1933, where Jacob Kagan-Chabchay was planning a museum for Jewish art. The circumstances of the revolution confounded these plans and the painting ended up with his brother Alexandre Kagan-Chabchay, who had settled in Paris to trade in art. In October 1936, the collector Charles Im Obersteg purchased the work from Alexandre Kagan-Chabchay and sold it to Galerie Rosengart in 1952. The Kunstmuseum Bern purchased the painting from the gallery that same year, but swapped it for another work by Chagall in 1957. It then remained in Galerie Rosengart until the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen purchased the painting “Jour de fête” for its holdings in 1963.
