Provenance

After its creation in 1916, the painting “Le soldat à la pipe” by Fernand Léger was purchased by the painter Nils de Dardel for Rolf de Maré during the First World War. It subsequently remained in Rolf de Maré’s collection until at least 1954. Since 1957, the work was verifiably the property of Philippe Dotremont, who sent it to Japan in 1964 and sold it to Tokutaro Yamamura. However, Yamamura returned the work a short time later and it became part of Galerie Beyeler’s collection in 1965. The Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen purchased the painting “Le soldat à la pipe” from this gallery for its holdings in 1965.
