Provenance
The painting “Le cabinet anthropomorphique” by Salvador Dalí was presented in 1936, the same year it was created, at Alex. Reid & Lefevre. Edward James purchased several works by Dalí, including this painting, at the exhibition. As James emigrated from London via Los Angeles to Mexico in 1940, he sold a large part of his collection in 1948. It can therefore be assumed that the work also changed hands at this time before returning to Alex. Reid & Lefevre in 1960 at the latest through M. Knoedler & Co. From 1965 to 1970, the work was verifiably part of a private collection. The Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen purchased the painting “Le cabinet anthropomorphique” from Siegfried Adler for its holdings in 1973.
