Provenance

The painting “Schwarzer Fürst” by Paul Klee remained the property of the artist from the year of its creation in 1927 until 1929 at the latest, when he gave it to Rudolf Probst on consignment for an exhibition at his Galerie Neue Kunst Fides in January 1928. In February 1928, Probst delivered it on consignment to Galerie Alfred Flechtheim in Berlin, where it was exhibited in March 1928. The work can be found in Hermann Lange’s collection from 1929 at the latest until at least 1931. After that, its trace is lost until 1946, when Clifford Odets purchased it from the art dealer J. B. Neumann. Odets sold it to G. David Thompson for his collection at the end of 1953, where the work remained until it was sold to Galerie Beyeler in Basel in 1960. The state of North Rhine-Westphalia subsequently purchased the painting “Schwarzer Fürst” from Galerie Beyeler together with a further 87 works by Paul Klee. They formed the basis of the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen, which was founded in 1961.
