Provenance
The painting “Nature morte, harpe et violon” by Georges Braque had been in the possession of the German art dealer Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler since 1911 at the earliest, but no later than 1914. At the beginning of the First World War, the assets of Kahnweiler, who had run a gallery of the same name in Paris since 1907, were confiscated by the French state as enemy property and auctioned off at the Hôtel Drouot in Paris from 1921. Braque’s work was offered for sale at the fourth auction of the Kahnweiler collection in May 1923, where it was presumably purchased by Raoul La Roche. Since La Roche finished establishing his collection in 1928, the work must have become his property by that year at the latest; it can be traced there from 1933. The Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen purchased the painting “Nature morte, harpe et violon” from the La Roche collection through Galerie Beyeler for its holdings in 1962.
