Provenance

The painting “heroische Rosen” by Paul Klee remained the property of the artist from the year of its creation in 1938, when he sent it to his art dealer Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler at Galerie Simon in Paris on consignment. From there, the work reached the Nierendorf Gallery in New York in September 1938, where it can be traced until 1941. After Paul Klee’s death in 1940, the painting became the property of Klee’s wife Lily. The Nierendorf Gallery probably sold the painting, which was held on consignment for Lily Klee, to Mr. and Mrs. Henry Clifford in 1941 or at the latest in 1944. In 1953, Curt Valentin held the painting on consignment and offered it for sale to G. David Thompson on behalf of Henry Clifford. G. David Thompson purchased the work for his collection in 1953, where it remained until it was sold to Galerie Beyeler in Basel in 1960. The state of North Rhine-Westphalia subsequently purchased the painting “heroische Rosen” from Galerie Beyeler together with a further 87 works by Paul Klee. They formed the basis of the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen, which was founded in 1961.
