Provenance

The collage “Sifone di Seltz” by Carlo Carrà remained in the artist’s possession after its creation in 1914 until presumably 1917. In his memoirs, Leonide Massine mentioned that he had purchased a work by Carrà in 1917. Although it is unclear whether it was this collage, Carrà’s catalogue raisonné, compiled by Massimo Carrà, also suggests that Massine purchased it before 1926. By 1935 at the latest the work can be proven to be the property of Massine, who had already moved from Paris to New York in the mid-1920s. As a further provenance, a label on the back of the work refers to the New York gallery of Eugene Victor Thaw, which only began operating under the name E. V. Thaw & Co. in 1963. The work became part of Pedro Vallenilla Echeverria’s collection in 1964 at the latest. The Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen purchased the painting “Sifone di Seltz” from Xavier Fourcade for its holdings in 1977.

Between 2009 and 2012, several freelance provenance researchers examined the origins (provenance) of all works in the collection of the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen as part of a comprehensive research project funded by the German Lost Art Foundation. The focus was on all works created before 1945. For the collage “Sifone di Seltz,” the ownership history during the National Socialist period (1933–1945) could not be fully clarified. For this reason, the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen commissioned a more in-depth investigation into the history of this work in 2025.
