Provenance

The painting “Mädchen unter Japanschirm” by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner remained in the artist’s possession from its creation in 1909. It was not until February 1932 that he sold it to his Davos physician Dr. Fritz (Frédéric) Bauer, who had been building his own collection of Kirchner’s works since 1923. In 1953, Roman Norbert Ketterer, auctioneer of the Stuttgarter Kunstkabinett, purchased the work from Bauer, who went on a world tour and therefore dissolved his collection. Although the painting “Mädchen unter Japanschirm” was one of Ketterer’s self-proclaimed favorite paintings and hung in his private home in Campione, he transferred it to the collection of the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen in 1964.
