Provenance

Little is known about the whereabouts of the painting “Nature morte au faisan” by Chaїm Soutine after its creation around 1919. It belonged to the collection of Mr. and Mrs. Maurice J. Speiser from 1930 at the latest and was previously owned by Soutine’s art dealer Léopold Zborowski. The work was offered for sale as part of the Speiser Collection in January 1944 through the Parke-Bernet Galleries and was purchased at auction by Frederic R. Mann. It remained in Mann’s possession until at least 1967 and subsequently passed through various art dealers and private collections until it was auctioned by Sotheby’s in New York in 1986. In 1991, the work returned to the auction market, this time through Christie’s in New York. Galerie Rosengart loaned the painting “Nature morte au faisan” to the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen in 1994 until the latter purchased it for its holdings in 1997.
