Provenance

The painting “Dame à l’absence” by Yves Tanguy became the property of the art dealer Pierre Matisse in 1942, the year it was created. However, the work was entered in the Pierre Matisse Gallery’s inventory book at an unknown date with the abbreviation “A.M.,” which stands for Alexina Matisse. Alexina Matisse was married to Pierre Matisse until 1946 and received various works of art, presumably including this painting, as a settlement on their divorce. In 1954, she became the wife of Marcel Duchamp. The work subsequently remained in the Duchamps’s collection until at least 1969. The Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen purchased the painting “Dame à l’absence” from Galerie Andrée Stassart for its holdings in 1971.
