Provenance

Little is known about the whereabouts of the painting “Portrait de Max Jacob” by Amedeo Modigliani after its creation in 1916. By the end of 1925 at the latest it was part of Paul Poiret’s collection, which was offered for sale at the Hôtel Drouot auction house in Paris. The work was purchased by André Lefèvre at the auction and remained in his collection until it, too, was sold at auction at the end of 1965. The Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen purchased the painting “Portrait de Max Jacob” at the auction of the Lefèvre Collection at the Palais Galliera in 1965, but it did not arrive in Düsseldorf until 1972 due to a lengthy export dispute.
