Provenance

Little is known about the whereabouts of the painting “Le violoniste” by Marc Chagall after its creation in 1911. It must have been in the Bernheim-Jeune Gallery in Paris for some time before it was found in the collection of Robert Sturgis Ingersoll in 1931. The work remained in the Sturgis Ingersoll collection until at least 1965. From 1972 to 1974 at the latest the work was part of the holdings of the Norton Simon Inc. Museum of Art in Los Angeles and then went to Marlborough International Fine Art. The Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen purchased the painting “Le violoniste” for its holdings in 1975.
