Provenance

After its creation in 1928, the painting “Le masque vide” by René Magritte became part of the collection of Galerie Le Centaure, which was run by Walter Schwarzenberg. When the gallery had to close in 1931, E.L.T. Mesens purchased around 150 works by Magritte, including this painting, from the collection. The work remained in Mesen’s collection until at least 1947; from 1954 it can be found in the Sidney Janis Gallery in New York. From the late 1960s until its acquisition by the Kunstsammlung, the work is located at Garick Fine Art, presumably on consignment from a private collection. The Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen purchased the painting “Le masque vide” from Roberts for its holdings in 1973.
