Provenance
The painting “Paysage au germe de blé” by Max Ernst presumably remained in the artist’s possession from its creation in 1936 until it was purchased by the Jeanne Bucher Gallery in Paris in 1938. Galerie Jeanne Bucher still offered the work for sale in 1939, but there is no evidence of its whereabouts after that. It was, however, verifiably part of Georges Hugnet’s collection from 1945 until at least 1947. At the beginning of the 1960s, the work can be located at Richard L. Feigen & Co. before Giovanni Agnelli, grandson of the founder of FIAT, gave it to Marlborough Fine Art for sale on consignment. The Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen purchased the painting “Paysage au germe de blé” through Marlborough from Agnelli for its holdings in 1970.
Between 2009 and 2012, several freelance provenance researchers examined the origins (provenance) of all works in the collection of the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen as part of a comprehensive research project funded by the German Lost Art Foundation. The focus was on all works created before 1945. For the painting “Paysage au germe de blé,” the ownership history during the National Socialist period (1933–1945) could not be fully clarified. For this reason, the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen commissioned a more in-depth investigation into the history of this work in 2025.
