Provenance

Little is known about the whereabouts of the painting “Nature morte au compotier et journal” by Juan Gris after its creation in 1916. It was exhibited in 1927 as the property of Amédée Ozenfant and became part of the holdings of Léonce Rosenberg’s Galerie de l’Effort Moderne in early 1933. The latter sold the work about a year later to André Lefèvre, in whose collection it remained until an auction at the Palais Galliera in 1965. At the auction of the Lefèvre collection, the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen purchased the painting “Nature morte au compotier et journal” for its holdings.
