Provenance

Little is known about the whereabouts of the painting “Femme à la mandoline” by Pablo Picasso after its creation in 1908. In 1932, it is known to have been in the possession of the art dealer Pierre Loeb, who sold it to a private collection. Although the date of the sale is not documented, it can be assumed that it took place between 1941 and 1945. At the end of the 1950s, the work from the private collection was given on consignment to the son of Pierre Loeb, who had been working as an art dealer in New York since 1956. Albert Loeb brokered the work to Galerie Beyeler, which sold it to G. David Thompson by 1960 at the latest. In 1966, the painting was offered for sale by the Parke-Bernet Galleries from the Thompson collection, but it is not known whether it found a buyer. In April 1974, the work was purchased by the art dealership Modarco from Christie’s auction house. The Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen purchased the painting “Femme à la mandoline” from the Sylvia and Joseph Slifka Collection through Galerie M. Knoedler & Co. for its holdings in 1979.
