Provenance

Little is known about the whereabouts of the painting “Portrait de Fernande” by Pablo Picasso after its creation in 1909. It was presumably temporarily held by the Parisian art dealer Ambroise Vollard, but is known to have been in the USA since 1941 at the latest and in the possession of the New York gallery branch of Etienne Bignou from 1942, which was managed by Georges Keller from 1935. Etienne Bignou was a French art dealer, so the work may have come from Paris to New York through him. From 1944 at the latest the work was part of the collection of Henry and Barbara Church, who loaned it to the Museum of Modern Art in New York. After Henry and Barbara Church’s deaths, their art estate, including the portrait, was auctioned off at the Parke-Bernet Galleries in January 1961. Heinz Berggruen, owner of Berggruen & Cie., purchased the work at the auction for his private collection, where it remained for only a short time. The Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen purchased the painting “Portrait de Fernande” by Heinz Berggruen through the Contemporary Art Establishment for its holdings in 1963.
