Provenance

The painting “Bateaux à Collioure” by André Derain was verifiably owned by the Parisian art dealer Ambroise Vollard from 1930. As Vollard bought various works from Derain’s studio in 1905 and subsequently signed a contract with the artist, it can be assumed that Vollard had already owned the painting since its creation. Vollard died in a car accident in July 1939. His estate passed to his siblings and the de Galéa family, with whom Vollard was in close contact throughout his life. As Derain’s work can still be found in Vollard’s collection in 1938, it can be assumed that it was still part of his estate in 1939, which was largely sold off by his heirs during the Second World War. This work was also sold at the Hôtel Drouot auction house in Paris in March 1941. However, due to a lack of evidence about the consignor and the buyer from 1941, as well as a lack of exhibition or publication references, its further provenance until 1965 is unknown. That year, the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen purchased the painting “Bateaux à Collioure” through the Lefevre Gallery and an art dealer from a private collection in Paris for its holdings.
