Provenance

Little is known about the whereabouts of the painting “Portrait de Diego Rivera” by Amedeo Modigliani after its creation in 1914. Presumably no earlier than 1918, but no later than January 1920, Alden Brooks acquired the work from Léopold Zborowski. By 1923 at the latest, it was in the possession of the Paul Guillaume Gallery in Paris. After that, it can only be traced again in 1929, when it was part of the Jonas Netter collection until at least 1934. There are further indications of a temporary ownership of private collections from Stockholm Mexico. Galerie Beyeler bought the painting “Portrait de Diego Rivera” in 1978; it was purchased from Galerie Beyeler by the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen for its holdings in 1985.

Between 2009 and 2012, several freelance provenance researchers examined the origins (provenance) of all works in the collection of the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen as part of a comprehensive research project funded by the German Lost Art Foundation. The focus was on all works created before 1945. For the painting “Portrait de Diego Rivera,” the ownership history during the National Socialist period (1933–1945) could not be fully clarified. For this reason, the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen commissioned a more in-depth investigation into the history of this work in 2025.
