Provenance
Giorgio de Chirico, who left Paris and went to Italy because of the First World War, gave his painting “La statue silencieuse (Ariane)” to the French writer Jean Paulhan for safekeeping shortly after its creation in 1913. Around 1921, Paulhan bought several works from the artist, including the painting of Ariane. The work remained in Paulhan’s collection until at least 1955, probably even 1966, the year in which it was presented by the newly founded Albert Loeb & Krugier Gallery. Through Loeb’s business partner, Jan Krugier, the work presumably ended up in the Krugier Gallery in Geneva, from which the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen purchased the painting “La statue silencieuse (Ariane)” for its holdings in 1967.
