Provenance

The painting “Le goûter (Le golfe de Saint-Tropez)” by Henri Matisse remained the property of the artist after its creation in 1904. In April 1926, Marcel Bernheim bought it from Matisse for the Bernheim-Jeune Gallery in Paris under the title “Femme et enfant au bord de la mer.” That same year, in September 1926, the work was transferred to the Lucerne branch of Galerie Bernheim-Jeune. From this point on, its trace is lost. By 1939 at the latest it was part of the collection of Amy McCormick, wife of Robert R. McCormick. After Amy’s death, Robert McCormick loaned the work to the Art Institute of Chicago and in 1978 it was loaned to the Robert R. McCormick Foundation in New York’s Museum of Modern Art. In May 1986, the work was offered for sale at Sotheby’s in New York. It was then briefly in a private collection. In 1986, the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen finally purchased the painting “Le goûter (Le golfe de Saint-Tropez)” from the Jan Krugier Gallery for its holdings.
