Provenance
The painting “Grüne Dame im Gartencafé” by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner remained in the artist’s possession from its creation in 1912 until 1918. Kirchner had sent the work to Helene Spengler, Eberhard Grisebach’s mother-in-law, for viewing in 1917, but took it back into his possession before finally selling it to Grisebach in December 1918. The work then remained in Grisebach’s collection and his estate until at least 1956. At the end of the 1950s, the work can be located in Cologne with J. Steegmann and was passed from Roman Norbert Ketterer to Siegfried Adler between the mid-1960s and the early 1970s. The Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen purchased the painting “Grüne Dame im Gartencafé” for its holdings in 1971.
