Provenance
The painting “Komposition mit Gelb” by Piet Mondrian was used shortly after its creation in 1930 as the prize in a lottery organized for Mondrian’s benefit in January 1931. Of the 25 participants in the lottery, Jan Tschichold was the winner, in whose ownership the work remained until at least 1964. In the meantime, Tschichold sold it to Marguerite Arp-Hagenbach, but with the guarantee that he could buy it back at any time. In 1965 at the latest, the work became the property of the Galerie Beyeler, from which the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen purchased the painting “Komposition mit Gelb” for its holdings.
