Provenance

Immediately after its creation in 1936, Piet Mondrian sent the painting “Komposition mit Blau und Weiß” to the Valentine Gallery with whom he had signed a one-year contract. That same year, the gallery sold the work to Walter P. Chrysler Jr. In March 1945, the work was offered for sale as part of Chrysler’s collection at an auction at the Parke-Bernet Galleries. This is how it presumably ended up in the possession of Harry Holtzman, where it remained until 1963. The Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen then purchased the painting “Komposition mit Blau und Weiß” from Marlborough Fine Art for its holdings.
