Provenance

Shortly after its creation in 1926, the painting “La rencontre” by René Magritte came to the collection of Galerie Le Centaure, which was run by Walter Schwarzenberg. In 1931, Schwarzenberg left Galerie Le Centaure with several works and opened Galerie Schwarzenberg. However, both galleries had to close between 1931 and 1932 and their holdings were auctioned off in 1932. As no works by Magritte were offered at any of the auctions, Claude Spaak presumably purchased the painting from the artist himself. The work remained in Spaak’s collection until 1954 and then became part of the Eleanor Ward Gallery’s holdings. The gallery sold the work to a private collection in 1968, where it remained until 1970. That same year, the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen purchased the painting “La rencrontre” from Galerie d’Art moderne for its holdings.
