New acquisitions

Following the traditional canon of art history, the majority of the works in the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen were created by male artists working primarily in Europe and North America. Under the direction of Susanne Gaensheimer, the Kunstsammlung has been working since 2017 to expand the canon. New acquisitions of works by women and non-European artists have made the collection more diverse and global.

New acquisitions include important works by modern women artists such as Etel Adnan, Simone Fattal, Carmen Herrera, Gabriele Münter, and Alice Neel. Works by Ai Weiwei, Kader Attia, Cao Fei, William Kentridge, Senzeni Mthwakazi Marasela, Zanele Muholi, and Walid Raad add non-Western perspectives to the collection. With artists such as Ed Atkins, Sabine Moritz, Anys Reimann, Ursula Schulz-Dornburg, and Tobias Zielony, contemporary positions have also been added to the collection.
