Provenance

The painting “Verres, tasse de thé, bouteille et pipe sur une table” by Juan Gris became the property of the German art dealer Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler in 1914, the year it was painted. At the beginning of the First World War, the assets of Kahnweiler, who had run a gallery of the same name in Paris since 1907, were confiscated by the French state as enemy property and auctioned off at the Hôtel Drouot auction house in Paris from 1921. The work by Gris was offered for sale at the fourth auction of the Kahnweiler collection in May 1923, where it was presumably purchased by the surrealist poet Paul Eluard. Only about a year later, in July 1924, it was again on offer at the Hôtel Drouot, this time from the Eluard collection. The buyer is not known, but the work can be traced as the property of Armand Salacrou from 1928 to at least 1957. In the early 1960s, it was part of the collection of G. David Thompson. The Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen purchased the painting “Verres, tasse de thé, bouteille et pipe sur une table” from Galerie Beyeler for its holdings in 1963.
