Provenance

After its creation in 1926, the painting “Panorama populaire” by René Magritte entered the holdings of Paul-Gustave Van Hecke’s Galerie L’Epoque, which had been run by E.L.T. Mesens since 1927. The gallery had to close in April 1929 and its holdings were acquired by Galerie Le Centaure. Walter Schwarzenberg, director of Galerie Le Centaure, left the gallery in 1931 with some of its works and opened Galerie Schwarzenberg. However, it too had to close in 1932. E.L.T. Mesens purchased around 150 works by Magritte during the gallery liquidations, including this painting. The work verifiably remained in Mesens’ collection until 1957, but probably even until the early 1970s. The work subsequently remained in private collections in Brussels until it was purchased by the Kunstsammlung. The Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen purchased the painting “Panorama populaire” von der Galerie Brusberg for its holdings in 2002.
