Provenance

From the year of its creation in 1915, the painting “Les deux sœurs (L’ange juif)” by Giorgio de Chirico remained the property of the artist, who temporarily gave it to Paul Guillaume’s gallery on consignment. Paul Eluard, who had owned the work since 1936, bought it directly from the artist. However, as early as 1938, Eluard gave more than 100 Surrealist and Cubist works from his collection, including the painting by de Chirico, to Roland A. Penrose. The work can be found in Penrose’s collection until at least 1955. The Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen purchased the painting “Les deux sœurs (L’ange juif)” from Galerie L’Œil through the World Arts Establishment for its holdings in 1964.
