Provenance

Little is known about the whereabouts of the relief “Les trois cannes” by Hans Arp after its creation in 1927. From 1954, the work can be traced to the Liège collection of Fernand C. Graindorge. As Graindorge purchased various works directly from the artist, it is possible that he also received this relief from Arp. The Galerie Tarica purchased the work from Pierre Janlet, who in turn was a friend of Graindorge. The relief “Les trois cannes” has been part of the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen’s holdings since 1975.

Between 2009 and 2012, several freelance provenance researchers examined the origins (provenance) of all works in the collection of the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen as part of a comprehensive research project funded by the German Lost Art Foundation. The focus was on all works created before 1945. For the painting “Les trois cannes,” the ownership history during the National Socialist period (1933–1945) could not be fully clarified. For this reason, the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen commissioned a more in-depth investigation into the history of this work in 2025.
