Provenance

From its creation in 1938, the painting “Gefährliches” by Paul Klee remained the property of the artist, who sent it to his art dealer Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler at the Galerie Simon in Paris on consignment that year. From there, the work reached the Nierendorf Gallery in New York in September 1938, where it can be traced until at least 1944. After Paul Klee’s death in 1940, the painting became the property of Klee’s wife Lily. The Nierendorf Gallery probably sold the painting, which was held on consignment for Lily Klee, to a private collection in 1944 or in 1947 at the latest. In the 1950s, the work can be found in the Curt Valentin Gallery. At an unknown date, G. David Thompson purchased it for his collection, where it remained until it was sold to the Galerie Beyeler in Basel in 1960. The state of North Rhine-Westphalia subsequently purchased the painting “Gefährliches” from Galerie Beyeler together with a further 87 works by Paul Klee. They formed the basis of the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen, which was founded in 1961.
