Provenance

The painting “Le jardin sombre” by Yves Tanguy from 1928 was owned by André Breton by 1938 at the latest. As Breton and Tanguy were in contact with each other, Breton may have received the work directly from the artist. It remained in his collection until at least 1952, but probably until 1958. In the meantime, he gave it to the Galerie du Dragon in Paris on consignment before selling it to the art dealer Richard L. Feigen. By 1963 at the latest, the work had entered a private collection before finding its way back to Richard L. Feigen. The Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen purchased the painting “Le jardin sombre” from Richard L. Feigen & Co. for its holdings in 1977.

Between 2009 and 2012, several freelance provenance researchers examined the origins (provenance) of all works in the collection of the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen as part of a comprehensive research project funded by the German Lost Art Foundation. The focus was on all works created before 1945. For the painting “Le jardin sombre,” the ownership history during the National Socialist period (1933–1945) could not be fully clarified. For this reason, the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen commissioned a more in-depth investigation into the history of this work in 2025.
