Provenance

The painting “Le poète. Le roi David” was made available by Man Ray to Galerie de Beaune for an exhibition shortly after its creation in 1938, after which its trace is lost. However, it can be assumed that Man Ray stored it together with more of his works in Paris when he returned to the USA in the summer of 1940 due to the political situation in France. After the war, he was able to retrieve his property untouched and undamaged. From at least 1971 to 1980, the work can be found in the collection of Marcel Zerbib, who presumably purchased it directly from the artist. In 1988, the work can be found in the gallery of Zerbib’s partner, Marion Meyer, and in the possession of a private collection in Paris. The Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen purchased the painting “Le poète. Le roi David” from Galerie Alfred Kren for its holdings in 1990.
