Provenance

Shortly after its creation in 1913, Pablo Picasso’s painting “Nature morte, bouteille et verre” came into the possession of the German art dealer Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler, who had been running Galerie Kahnweiler in Paris since 1907. However, as a result of the First World War, his property was confiscated in France and auctioned off at the Hôtel Drouot auction house in Paris from 1921. According to Christian Zervos, the work was in the collection of Jean Coutrot in 1942, although he had already died by suicide in May 1941. As the work was hidden during the entire occupation, it can be assumed that it did not change hands between 1940 and 1945 and therefore probably belonged to Coutrot’s estate. In 1953, the art dealer Sidney Janis purchased it from Henriette Gomez, an employee of Galerie Pierre. The work remained in the Sidney Janis Gallery until at least 1960; in 1963 it was offered for sale by Galerie Schmela. The Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen purchased the painting “Nature morte, bouteille et verre” for its holdings in 1965.
