Provenance
Little is known about the whereabouts of the painting “Natura morta (Il vaso blu)” by Giorgio Morandi after its creation in 1920. The work did not reappear until 1945 at Il Milione, Galleria d’Arte Moderna in Milan, from which Riccardo Jucker bought it in 1947. In 1953, the gallery repurchased the work from Jucker, only to sell it to Eric Estorick a few months later. It remained in Estorick’s collection until at least 1956, after which it can be found with David E. Bright. The Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen purchased the painting “Natura morta (Il vaso blu)” from Marlborough Fine Art for its holdings in 1966.
Between 2009 and 2012, several freelance provenance researchers examined the origins (provenance) of all works in the collection of the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen as part of a comprehensive research project funded by the German Lost Art Foundation. The focus was on all works created before 1945. For the painting “Natura morta (Il vaso blu),” the ownership history during the National Socialist period (1933–1945) could not be fully clarified. For this reason, the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen commissioned a more in-depth investigation into the history of this work in 2025.
