Provenance

The painting “Karyatid” by Amedeo Modigliani was purchased by Paul Alexandre directly from the artist. Although the year of purchase is not known, the work must have become Alexandre’s property between 1911-1912, when it was created, and 1920, the year of Modigliani’s death. It remained in Alexandre’s collection until it was sold to Galerie Berggruen & Cie. in the early 1960s. The Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen purchased the painting “Karyatid” from Galerie Berggruen & Cie. for its holdings in 1962.
