Provenance
Little is known about the whereabouts of Joan Miró’s painting “Étoiles en des sexes d’escargot” after its creation in 1925. Before it entered the collection of Walter P. Chrysler Jr. by 1941 at the latest it was temporarily located in Galerie de Beaune in Paris. Pierre Matisse, owner of the Pierre Matisse Gallery, bought the painting “Étoiles en des sexes d’escargot” from Walter P. Chrysler Jr. in 1955 and sold it to the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen 13 years later.
Between 2009 and 2012, several freelance provenance researchers examined the origins (provenance) of all works in the collection of the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen as part of a comprehensive research project funded by the German Lost Art Foundation. The focus was on all works created before 1945. For the workpainting “Étoiles en des sexes d’escargot,”
the ownership history during the National Socialist period (1933–1945) could not be fully clarified. For this reason, the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen commissioned a more in-depth investigation into the history of this work in 2025.
