Provenance

The painting “Nu au miroir” by Joan Miró presumably remained the property of the artist from its creation in 1919. There is evidence that it passed through various galleries in the following years, but whether it was in their holdings as a consignment or as property is unknown. There are references to Galerie Dalmau and Galerie Pierre. As Pierre Loeb, owner of Galerie Pierre, had represented Miró since 1926 and had also shared the artist representation with Pierre Matisse since 1934, it can be assumed that the work passed from Loeb to Matisse. It can be located in his New York gallery from 1938 at the latest and remained there until 1964. Matisse appears to have taken it into his private collection in 1959, as the ownership details are given as “Mr. and Mrs. Pierre Matisse, New York” from this point onwards. The Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen purchased the painting “Nu au miroir” from the Paris Galerie L’Œil through the World Arts Establishment for its holdings in 1964.

Between 2009 and 2012, several freelance provenance researchers examined the origins (provenance) of all works in the collection of the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen as part of a comprehensive research project funded by the German Lost Art Foundation. The focus was on all works created before 1945. For the painting “Nu au miroir,” the ownership history during the National Socialist period (1933–1945) could not be fully clarified. For this reason, the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen commissioned a more in-depth investigation into the history of this work in 2025.
